Verlander book signing!

Posted On October 17, 2014 at 11:43 am by / No Comments

When his son Justin was growing up, Richard Verlander would often play catch with his eldest in their yard. Richard told young Justin, if he practiced hard enough, one day he would be able to throw a rock to the other side of the pond that was adjacent to their yard in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia. After watching his father attempt the feat, Justin launched his rock clear to the other side – hitting a tree before rolling back into the water. Justin was ten years old.

Fast forward 21 years – Justin is an ace pitcher for the Detroit Tigers,’ winning Rookie of the Year in 2006, his 2011 no hitter vs the Toronto Blue Jays,  the AL CY Young & AL MVP in 2011, has helped the Tigers reach the verlander bookplayoffs five of his eight years (including 2011-2014 and two World Series appearances in 2006 and 2012), and is recognized as one of the top pitchers in the MLB. Not to mention the Verlander’s younger son Ben is a standout outfielder at Old Dominion.

Reflecting on their experiences, the Verlanders sat down and put pen to paper, writing “Rocks Across the Pond: Lessons Learned. Stories Told.” While there are walks down memory lane of the big baseball moments, just like any proud parents would share, “Rocks Across the Pond” is about the passing on of lessons they learned as the parents of standout athletes, about raising successful (not just in athletics) children.

Releasing the book in the spring of 2012, Richard and Kathy Verlander have done signings around Michigan and their home state of Virginia over the last couple of years. On their list of upcoming stops? Total Sports Complex in Wixom! The signing will take place Sunday, November 9th, 2014 from 11am to 5pm. The book will be available for purchase (cash, check, or credit card will be accepted) and each signed book will be personalized.
